Early Hathaway/Rest Lake ...
|
Hathaway/Rest Lake is located in T4N R1W, Section 25. The closest and earliest "Hathaway" which appears on the U.S. Bureau of Land Management's General Land Office (GLO) Records database (2011), is Marshall R. Hathaway, who was granted title to 106.46 acres of T4N R1E, Section 31, on July 2, 1866 (1820 Sale-CashEntry), which plots east of Lake River and southeast of today's Hathaway/Rest Lake.
The 1860 and 1863 cadastral surveys (tax surveys) for T4N R1W have the lake called "Mud Lake".
The 1888 NOAA "Kalama to Fales Landing" chart has the lake called "Hathaway Lake".
The Clark County Plat map of 1888, found on "Rootsweb.com", has the lake called "Fales Lake", while the Clark County Plat map, ca.1922 (also found on "Rootsweb.com") has the lake as "Hathaway Lake".
The 1888 Plat map shows two Donation Land Claims (DLC) south of today's Hathaway/Rest Lake (and crossing "Campbell's Lake and spanning Lake River), belonging to M.R. Hathaway and J.S. Hathaway. Inland east of Lake River is the DLC of H.M. Hathaway.
The 1949 NOAA "Saint Helens to Portland" chart and the 1968 NOAA "Saint Helens to Vancovuer" chart both call the lake "Hathaway Lake".
The U.S. Board of Geographic Names has "Hathaway Lake" as the official name for "Rest Lake".
