Western Tanager:
The Western Tanager was discovered by Lewis and Clark on June 6, 1806, while at Camp Chopunnish, on the Clearwater River, Idaho. Captain Lewis wrote: "... we meet with a beautifull little bird in this neighbourhood about the size and somewhat the shape of the large sparrow ... the plumage is remarkably delicate; that of the neck and head is of a fine orrange yellow and red ...". In the early 1800s the Western Tanager was was called the "Louisana Tanager" as it was discovered in what was then the Louisiana Purchase.

[was] discovered, in the remote regions of Louisiana, by an exploring party under the command of Captain George Merriwether Lewis, and Lieutenant, now General, William Clark, in their memorable expedition across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. ... [It is] entitled to a distinguished place in the pages of AMERICAN ORNITHOLOGY, both as being, till now, altogether unknown to naturalists, and as [native] of what is, or at least will be, and that at not distant period, part of the western territory of the United States.
