Spotted Sandpiper:
Ehrlich, Dobkin, and Wheye, in their 1988 publication "The Birder's Handbook", write "Piping means 'chirping'. Sandpipers are thus birds that 'chirp in the sand'. Most sandpiper names are descriptive -- the Stilt Sandpiper for its long legs, the Solitary Sandpiper because it rarely is found in flocks. The Western Sandpiper breeds in Alaska, but, confusingly, winters on the east coast as well as the west."
