Red Phalarope:
The Red Phalarope (Phalaropus fulicaria) is one of three Phalaropes species, the other two being the Wilson's Phalarope and the Red-necked Phalarope. The phalarope genus name "Phalaropus" means "coot-footed" and was inspired by the phalarope's feet which are adapted for swimming. Two of the phalarope species winter at sea and have semipalmate (partially webbed) feet with lobed toes, while the more terrestrial Wilson's Phalarope has flanged toes.
Ehrlich, Dobkin, and Wheye, in their 1988 publication "The Birder's Handbook", write "Phalarope is an example of a common name borrowed from the scientific Phalaropus, from Phalaris plus pous, which in turn means 'coot-footed' in Greek. The name refers to the birds' lobed toes."
