Northern Flicker:
Audubon, in his "The Birds of America" (1842, vol.4), splits the yellow-shafted and the red-shafted Flicker into two species, as was custom of the times. He called the yellow-shafted Flicker the "Golden-winged Woodpecker" while the red-shafted was the "Red-shafted Woodpecker". Audubon states that Swainson first described the Red-shafted Woodpecker from a specimen from Mexico.
