Northern Cardinal:
Ehrlich, Dobkin, and Wheye, in their 1988 publication "The Birder's Handbook", write "The root of cardinal is Latin for 'important'. Cardinals are important officials of the Catholic Church, and their red robes gave both common and scientific names to Cardinalis cardinalis. The trivial part of the species name Cardinalis sinuatus means 'cured' in Latin (referring to its bill). The common name of that bird, however, is Pyrrhuloxia -- held over from the genus where it had once been placed. Pyrrhuloxia means 'bullfinch' in Greek."
