Lincoln's Sparrow:
The Lincoln's Sparrow was named after Thomas Lincoln, who was with the naturalist James Audubon when he discovered the bird in Labrador in 1833, and who shot the bird for Audubon to study. Originally in his 1841 publication "The birds of America" (Vol.III), Audubon used "Lincoln's Pinewood-Finch" as the heading and on his sketch, while in the text he called the bird "Tom's Finch" and a few paragraphs later "Lincoln's Finch".
Ehrlich, Dobkin, and Wheye, in their 1988 publication "The Birder's Handbook", write "Sparrow is based on the Anglo-Saxon word meaning 'flutterer'."
